INTERESTING FACT:  Beavers salute their Leaders using the fingers on their right hand which means that they always shake with the left hand!

Beavers work towards a variety of badges and awards during every session.  Most badges are made up of 3 or 4 seperate activities which each Beaver must complete in order to earn the badge.  Attendance is therefore crucial so that Beavers don't miss out on learning skills and taking part in the activities that will result in the badge being awarded.  Leaders work hard to ensure we offer a balanced programme of practical skills, responsible citizenship and fun.  The Scout Motto "Be Prepared" is at the core of everything we do.  We support the development of friendships, social skills and team work through playing games and helping Beavers to overcome some carefully crafted challenges, so that each Beaver leaves the Colony having learned some new skills that enable them to be more independent and resilient, while having had fun with their friends in a safe environment.

Activity badges

Many of the badges available are activity badges, which allow Beavers to show their progress in existing pursuits, but also to try all kinds of new things and form new interests.  These badges include things like Air Activities, Healthy Eating, Hobbies, Exploration and Experiment badges.  Staged activity badges like the "Musician" badge or "Swimmer" badge for example, can be built upon as the Beaver becomes more experienced at their particular interest and can be carried up into Cubs and Scouts.  Some of these badges can be done independently at home eg: Animal Carer badge, for those Beavers that have pets.

Challenge badges

Gaining a challenge badge involves accomplishing a number of more ambitious tasks within the Colony or community. There are several challenge badges across a number of themes, from the physical and outdoorsy, to challenges dealing with the local community or issues connected with the Scouting world.  Beavers work towards Challenge badges within their lodges as part of a team.

Core badges

In addition, there are a number of core badges, obtained upon joining or moving on from the Colony, or for time spent in the Scouting movement - these are awarded as a Beaver progresses through the Scouting Movement.

Although we did not break the Penny Mile World Record, we managed to raise over £1000 as a result of all the hard work of the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and friends of 1st Colerne Scouts who collected 1p coins for this challenge!  Well done!
